"Horizontal draping" is okay. it just depends on where your pieces gather. On a long piece, you should have folds higher up to define your body instead of masking it. these are, of course, just general rules. It's just like how dropwaists are generally unflattering on women unless they're made in a particular way (to highlight other aspects of the woman's body, e.g.: cleavage, shoulders, back).
