This asshole gets it.

This is the central issue behind your friends attitude towards fashion, OP. It's also an attitude that exists on /fa/ and among millions of other people as well (probably everyone to some degree); the idea that fashion stopped "trying" at a certain point and started going downhill, and that anything that adheres to the fashion at the imagined "peak" of fashion before the decline is inherently better.

Fashion isnt a church. It doesn't have set-in-stone doctrines, rules, or standards. Granted, often these things are shaped by society in general, but society in general is not static either. To break your friend of his bad habits, you must first convince him that fashion is a continuum of new and old ideas, not a sacred and unchanging fixed point.
