So how long does the awkward phase last? I've never grown my hair out before because I always get paranoid I'm balding and then shave it to see if it comes back

I'm trying to grow it now and it's awful, no matter what I do it looks bad. I bought some conditioner, but am I supposed to stop using shampoo entirely or what

I'm trying not to shampoo as much and condition more but it still looks bad, if I try to slick it back or to the side it just poofs back up later in the day

Am I just fucked until it gets longer or am I supposed to not shampoo at all and just condition
