how do you wear combat boots?

ive seen people do the thing where they put their pants inside, is that the normal way to go?
or can you bind the boots real tight and put your pants above, i think that's what they do in the military but they got real wide pants afaik
what if i wear normal/ slim pants (meaning jeans) instead of terrorist hunting gear?
