Your baby may not need to wear shoes at first, since they'll probably do most of their walking indoors. Shoes are useful for protecting against cuts and cold in the outdoors, though. Shoes for babies should be very flexible, very roomy, with a thin sole and no heel. Nothing should be constricting the foot in any way.
Pic related is a pair of baby's slippers from Soft Star. Their construction makes them extremely flexible. You could also make your child a pair of custom-fitted moccasins if you're into leathercraft.
