Those faggots in TIP thread are crying mad over how "DA is just a prep".
What if say to them something like "Oh, this is just an English county wear, why the fuck do you call it Ivy"? Imagine the reaction.
DA is standalone because there is a certain mood in its core which is absent in prep. We build a theme based on this mood, project it onto clothes and the "core" is built. DA purpose is to catch the pessimism and disenchantment with many things in modern world (current state of fashion included), this is why it is "Dark". And "Academia" basically refers to a "researching man" archetype, not a particular student. professor or university (but if you want to refer to humanities students, you can do it). Note how similarly were dressed post-punk bands of early 80s, they share the same mood, and they basically were the researchers disenchanted in punk music, willing to build something new.
