Aside from keeping a critical mind whenever you look at something you think is cool, I'd rally suggest reading the books pattern magic - gives you a feel for how garments are actually constructed and the amount of work that goes into it.

If you've got an acquaintance with access to a loom, try out weaving, it really helps you appreciate fabric regardless of wether it's a simple cotton blend or some crazy Cdiem metal/wool/silk/paper-blend.

Look through various tumblrs, magazines, superfuture's "waywt"-thread(s), stylezeitgeist, the sartorialist, jaknjill, stockholm streestyle, facehunter.

Put some actual thought into what you think looks good, regardless of wether it's an editorial out of vogue or if it's a character from your favourite vidya.

Save your money and buy higher quality stuff rather than fast-fashion - it will make you look and feel better, plus it comes with the extra advantage of not being made by legal slaves in Bangladesh, will be less environmentally harmful and in the long run will be more cost-efficient.
