>Many people say that these are watches for people who don't know a crap about high watchmaking and their prices are inflated by the brand name
That's more or less true to a certain extent. But you don't have to have some kind of sperg's notion of "muh high horologologol" to want a time telling piece of jewelry, which is what every single wristwatch above a certain price is.

Cartier at least compared to some other brands has some standout, signature models. If you like that look then that's that. That's what you buy if that's what you want.
There's little "horological merit" in these basic models, but then again that's true of almost all watches below shit like grand complications.
>Do Santoses/Tanks have in house movements?
No. They'll probably be getting movements one day from other brands in the Richemont portfolio.

Remember that Cartier is a jewelry house first and a watchmaking house second, unlike the dedicated watch brands that you're familiar with.
They're in that niche with Bvlgari, Piaget and Chopard.

A note about value:
There were some articles a year or so ago talking about how in 2017 Richemont (Cartier), had to buy back 250 million worth of watches and scrapped them to prevent them from being sold at ultra discount by retailers and flooding the market, devaluing the brand like all fuck.

Now, sure this period coincided with a lot of shit going on in the watch market that caused a mini crisis (Chinese laws clamping down on gift corruption, which was very frequently luxury watches etc.), but still, it puts into perspective just how valuable these things are and perhaps how much they really should cost.

Have a look at resale on whatever models you're interested in, see the general used market price and then decide whether or not you'd want to pay the price for a new one.

IMO, if it's a square watch a JLC reverso is much more interesting, in every way. Costlier though. I don't like the dials on many cartiers; look cheaply painted.
