No need to jump into the speedmaster pricepoint, a good and reliable chronograph movement is the valjoux, is nice, not fancy , but many watches use it so you can service it with no problem, and the best thing is you can find for just a bit over 1000. So yes, for chronos I would wait and pick something above 1k, Then there is a huge jump in chrono prices until you start scratching the in house movement watchmakers at around the 3k-4k mark. About gettin an omega...well, they are nice, but overpriced, you can have less expensive chronos from seiko,frederique constant,longines... (pic related is fairly cheap, around 1,2k)

Fortis have more heritage than many brands,yet they are almost unknown. They need to have better prices and make less chunky models or versions, many of their watches are huge.
