There's a reason they would do this shit. Because it gets cold in the winter and it helps you stay warm. Soldiers back then would do this regularly. So there's something to it. Assuming you don't wanna bulk up in heavy layers or you don't have the option to buy them. I think it should be socially acceptable to do this.
It's not just a fashion thing for soldiers. When it comes to war it's all about practicality. Sure they wanted to look good for the times as well. But if this didn't keep them warm they wouldn't have done it because it effects how good you do on the field.
