It's super hard to make it, dude. You don't necessarily need to suck a bunch of dicks, but you need to be extremely striking (O'Pry tier), and have great connections (RJ). These days, developing a large social media following is probably the best thing you can do.
Male models are much more disposable than females, most of the time they're just used as props and eye candy because nobody gives a fuck about male fashion.
