the fact that it doesn't seem remarkable to you at all is testament to helmut's impact -- to the fact that the style of cut he pioneered here, and in his other collections, is now such a fundamental pillar of modern menswear. you've gotta put this in the right context:

helmut was an american sportswear designer at the very end of the twentieth century, working for a label which (at this point) was still independently-owned but competing with enormous financially-secure companies like calvin klein, michael kors, etc. you also have to recall that this was right in the middle of the "casual" movement -- where increasingly men were wearing the same outfits to work and to play -- and all of these labels were struggling to answer that demand for the clothes which you could wear to work and then out at night. this is the era that brought us "business casual," "smart casual," et al.

so what you see if you take a look at what these companies (and hl) were putting out then is their answer to that vacuum. go look at some of the late 1990s klein stuff, and some of the kors stuff, and then at lang. he's cutting suits with higher rises, slimmer legs, higher-cut armholes on the jackets, lighter, softer fabrics; they're more comfortable, physically, but you can also feel more at ease in them.
