My advice would be to actually emphasis the contrast. I decided to drop the blending, I was scared how it would turn out and just stuck to a more conservative version of the cut, instead asked for my hair to be pinned up and sheared everything underneath it off.

Since I cannot give you any advice on cutting your own hair; bump.
