Well the way I do it is, I go with a decent watch on my wrist and ask them straight up for a New Customer-Discount. Or go to a boutique when it's close to the end of the month or end of a fiscal quarter.
But in the case of the GS, it was already at a discount because it was sitting there for 7 months.

You mean the hour markers and hands etc? Well the dial itself is very interesting, it has real depth/it's 3D, iirc 0.3mm depth between the triangles, that's why it looks different from every angle. But the hour indices/markers and the hands are just pressed out and have no other finishing done to them. Granted the naked eye can't see those imperfections but they exist.
Compared to my Tudor, it's not bad, maybe even on par. Compared to my Homos, it's noticable worse. Compared to my GS, it's abysmal.
Everything is better in the presage compared to my baby alpinist, especially the bracelet. Is it worth 1K? Well, it would be if, like you mentioned, the movement wasn't on par with watches that cost 1/3rd of the price.
If you can find it at 800$ or so, go for it. Be sure to regulate the movement.
