the blade is just there to trim frayed yarns, it's not necessary to have an overlock to finish seams and the lack of a blade isn't what makes a straight stitch inappropriate for knits; it's the habit of straight stitch machines to try and eat knit fabric, particularly home machines, and it's the fact that the straight stitch doesn't really stretch and the zig zag doesn't really stretch properly. the overlock is simply the most appropriate for seaming knit fabric.
