This is a very long answer that, quite frankly, I don't feel like writing. But I will say that I think corporate interests are a threat to democracy in our country while simultaneously insuring our global dominance. As are political parties and ideologues of all sorts. Lots of things are both good and bad, and the task of balancing pros and cons is where I think we shine.
Our nation was founded upon the notion that perfection is unattainable, that the best form of government is one that remains fluid and in constant change, ever responding to the changing will of the people. The problem is modulating the rate of that change. When change is prone to sweep a nation too quickly, we can often find ourselves with Hitlers, Maos and Pol Pots tromping about the global stage, murdering millions.
*Our system* is in constant motion, but it's so riddled with checks and balances that it moves at a snail's pace. This allows people to reflect upon the direction their nation is headed and see if it's a bad one before things get too grim. It's what's saved us as a nation time and time again, and I would post citations but I really don't care to dig them up.
