Either/or. It can get to be a habit after a point, like knuckle cracking. I know exactly what you mean by your description of it all, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I only get the clicking when I open my mouth, it feels like the joints hang on for a slit second and then slip over one another.

I grind my teeth a lot when I sleep, too. Just to repeat, get it checked out. A night guard might do you some good.
