Really define prep.

Because there's this kind of prep, more along the lines with "ivy prep" and then there's the prep which is actually just #menswear (the bad connotation version) and then there's contemporary prep, which is more like what you posted.

Ivy prep, when executed appropriately, is cool - not my favourite, but definitely looks nice on some people. But a lot of people try to go too "heritage" or classic and end up looking like upper-middle class grandfathers with patent leather loafers and ill-fitting shirts, which the grandfathers can usually be fine in (because why should they even care) but the look doesn't translate with tryhards - that's more along the lines of contemporary prep. The menswear type stuff is usually better along the lines of aesthetically pleasing, but usually gets caught up in hype and trend, with exaggerated to the point of peacocking type of details. This is usually pretty bad.

Ivy prep, which is just the term I'm using for it (modern ivy league schools don't really look like that though, that should be kept in mind too) comes from being sensible and a bit more humble, but still having well-fitting clothing.
