If you just care about brands then yes, it was better in the 70's when omega was 2000's seiko tier and Rolex were actual tools.
But if you're a spec whore then there's plenty to enjoy. Mechanicals dominate the market now to the point where it's actually difficult to find a nice quartz watch.
