it follows the tone of several dystopian scifi movies that existed before it.

it only seems groundbreaking to you because you've never seen those movies.

movies such as:
Midnight Eye Gokuu
Patlabor 2
A wind named Amnesia
and basically every movie directed by Kawajiri or Oshii before that
Oshii just took one of the stories from the gits manga, and made it fit the genre's tone and visuals.

the movie that set the tone and standard for dystopian scifi for years to come was The Matrix, and it also drew from other OVAs of that era like Angel Cop.
GitS didn't have a direct impact on movies. maybe it influenced Twilight of the Dark Master but it's hard to tell cause all those movies are super similar.

I recced arise because it's less outdated, not because it's better (it's not)
