From what I've heard the shaggy dogs are about the thickest shetlands you can get and most cheaper alternatives are thinner and lighter weight. So if that's important to you then yeah they're worth it.

Sometimes I tuck mine in sometimes I don't, it's really a fit by fit basis. Most don't have ribbed hems anyway so that doesn't really matter. If you're worried about it looking slovenly then you can wear it like a sweater with a button up under it like my fit
