I'm not super well-versed into the history of fragrance, so my answer lies very solely on modern trends:

Dior Sauvage and Versace Eros. They're not even bad, I like them both decently. But they're both picked because of the marketing and/or packaging. Everyone "knows" of them so now I MUST GET THEM. Walk into a Sephora to test some fragrances and you'll have 3 people asking for Sauvage while you're there.

OH! And Bleu de Chanel for the very same reason. Because everyone knows about Bleu de Chanel so now I GOTTA GET BLEU DE CHANEL.
