They're not. Square-toed shoes look very ugly and unnatural. They haven't been "in" since the 90s, and even when they were in they looked ugly.

"Nice" is a bad way to describe clothing if you have an interest in clothing. "What should I wear to the gathering?" "Oh, how about a nice shirt and some nice slacks and a nice pair of shoes?" It doesn't mean anything other than "clean and dressier than not casual." But look at anyone in an ill-fitting suit--dressy and clean can still look terrible.

Get a pair of shoes with a more natural toe. And Don't wear black shoes unless they're sneakers or boots or you're going to a funeral.

Try to be very specific with them, they are very understandable when it comes to men's hair and are easy to talk with so give it a shot.
