I've heard scares either way e.g. "fasting makes your body panic and cling on to any food it does get" "oh but a consistent low amount makes your body adjust to that and plateau"

Personally v susceptible to "starvation mode" so I've been going the slow and steady route, 7-10 meals a day between 40-200 calories each and an hour or two apart, totaling to 600-800 a day on average. Been working out pretty well so far
