As a musician and a fan of "extreme" metal I can safely say that 90% of the bands (new and old) that fit into the genre are redundant, lifeless copies of better artists who came before them. For every Carcass there's a million grindy worship bands and for every Darkthrone there's a million "cold", "lo-fi" and "trve" black metal bands. Sure, you can find some good shit in there since some bands actually understand the difference between inspiration and mimicry: Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega are probably the newest "black metal" that I find enjoyable. The more you branch out and try to find new bands, the more you start hearing and seeing the same shit funny enough.

Most black metal bands beyond the start of the "second wave" seem more concerned with taking a piece of the past for themselves. Putting on their uniform: their battlevest, nails, patches and facepaint then screeching about the same themes of fantasy, paganism, satanism, whatever. Despite claiming to be so "anti everything" they aren't far removed from juggalos at this point in regards to their homogenous fashion.
