GN has its roots in Carpe Diem and associated brands as well as the work of some other designers, which for brevity's sake will not be listed. CDiem is an anti-fashion label that focuses on 1, formalism and 2, utility. Primacy is given to aesthetics, i.e., the artform, the silhouette, the compositional elements. This is accomplished through artisanship, i.e. as directly as possible from creator to buyer. Equally important is quality, which becomes evident when examining the construction of CDiem boots. Japanese people, in general, have the greatest eye for quality and it is no surprise that for such a small population an astonishing quantity of CDiem footwear can be found there. Of course it goes without saying that when you pay top dollar you will expect top quality. Rick Owens, Julius and Boris Bidjan Saberi are descendants of this aesthetic. These brands are perhaps less centered on formalist thought and have progressed towards exploring some abstract or historical ideology, e.g. Rick with the desolation of the suburban Californian sprawl, and Julius with the sci-fi noir of Blade Runner meets Tokyo alleyways. All these things are not, shall we say, common representations of reality, but contain instead an artistic divorcement from realism. The third wave, Devoa, InAisce, etc, etc. continue these lines of thought in their own ways. Note that there are NO ICONS, i.e. NO VISIBLE BRANDING, NO TRENDS, NO HYPE, NO CELEBRITIES, NO "BALLING" and NO IDEOLOGY rooted in today's consumerist culture, that features into GN. If you buy clothing with any of these proscribed traits in mind, then you sir do not belong to this movement, which is nothing more than an appreciation of art.1. GN dress to "stand out" = FALSE There is an element of subterfuge to these brands reminiscent of hiding in dark alleyways or underground bunkers...I dare say that we feel most at home at night, walking around the vast urban labyrinths. No one gives a shit about the identity of the wearer
