It's actually simple. I can activate, stop, and reset the chronograph sightless. It takes fewer actions than activating a stopwatch on a phone. If designed well, then it's extremely legible even under tough circumstances. I use two at work, and now they are indispensable. If you don't need a stopwatch for anything, then it's like having a date on a watch when you don't need one; a cool complication, but nothing more.

I am definitely a fan of the aesthetics of a chronograph; I love lots of subdials, and I love the interactivity that a chronograph provides. A 3-hander just tells the time...and that's about it. Boring.

Christmas is always busy, but no complaints. How are you doing, CitizenChad?

Aside from my 0100 and Nighthawk, and your Stiletto, I honestly don't look at Citizen. I had briefly looked hard at the new mechanical movement they produced, but these days nothing at all tickles my fancy. I've had a love-hate relationship with Citizen; sometimes I think they get their design dead-on, but most of the time there always seems to be a 'growth' somewhere.

Today it's the work pair as usual, but while I was putting up the tree, the Mark40 was kicking ass.

Have a good one, Fren.

I'd say there's no reason not to try to get a great vintage if you are up to getting it running well. From what I understand, the older movements are still better in reliability than the Seagull, and if you're going to have the aviation watch at all, then you should have the fly-back capability. I don't think the Seagull does that, or at least, the Venus movement they use in every microbrand doesn't. Good luck!

Off again Frens. Be excellent to each other!

In all seriousness Anon, you don't have much time left. All of the mother-of-pearl ones are gone, and the normal black dialed ones are almost out. If you want one, get one now and don't look back.

If you want the movement but not the design, Citizen has started putting them into less expensive versions with multiple dial configurations. I do enjoy mine a lot, and if you get yours I wish you the same. There is a satisfaction knowing that each second-strike is like an archer hitting the target, perfectly, every second.

Me too. That's why I always wear two at work.

You still can. 861s are readily available, in varying degrees of wear and condition. Even a standard 1861 is cheaper...they start around 4500 from Japan. Just get one, have it serviced by Omega, and wear and enjoy. You have nothing to lose but time.

I use two chronographs at work, independently. So, every day, to answer your first question.

The small dials work provided you are used to reading at a quick glance what the elapsed time is, but it'll never be as fast as a central-minutes counter or a bezel. I can activate them sight-unseen, and I can refer to them at a glance.

Because everything you said is wrong. It's a Lemania 5100 movement, and it's the only one housing this movement that uses the moonwatch case. As for why someone would buy it? It's awesome.

Good. Fucking busy, but very good nevertheless. I do enjoy seeing your pics every once in a while; I don't know why, but they always bring a smile to my face. They're far more creative than my own. Hope you stay in good health man.

No. I keep them in a drawer to remind me not to waste money.

Best of luck with the search. I love speedies too.

I've had experience with the ceramic cases for the Speedies; yes, they can shatter, but you really do need to do something catastrophic (i.e. drop it two floors down onto concrete or tile). In normal wear and tear, you'll be fine, and if you're normally careful with watches, then they'll last as well as any other.

Buying a 321 without an extract isn't an automatic no-go; if you trust the seller and the pics of the movement, case, bezel, handset, and dial align with what you should see according to the model, then an extract isn't really necessary before purchase. I'm very happy with my 321, but I did purchase it without the benefit of an extract (I got that after). If you want a Speedy that is 'real' for the Space Race, then don't settle. Buy the best one you can at the price you are comfortable with, and don't look back. Beware though; there are counterfeit bezels floating around, and real ones in good condition are getting rarer to find. Last thought about the 321s - the performance tolerances are much wider than the 861s; even if a trusty watchmaker adjusts the rate to perform accurately under 'daily life' circumstances, you will see it perform far worse when it's under 24 hours power reserve. There's a reason the Apollo astronauts had a scheduled 'watch-winding' in their daily routine.

MKIIs are lots of fun if you want a different case shape for your collection, and they're far cheaper (or at least, used to be) than any Speedy Pro.

Finally; I'm not convinced you'll make a mistake if you're being careful from the onset. The trick is having the disposable income 'ready' for when the vintage watch appears. Timing is everything.

Hope that helps, and share it when it arrives.
