She’s still screaming when the dust clears, her entire body pulled back into the depths of that bucket seat, knees around her head, hands clasped over her eyes. The doe vanishes into the forest, its flank only grazed. We’ve spun out a bit, but that’s all. The engine pulses, the dust settles and the halogens continue. Her screams settle into sobs, settle into gasping breaths.
