The only reason why Rolex is such a powerful brand today is because they don't make quartz models. They very briefly made quartz models in the 1970s, but realized they couldn't compete with Seiko and instead went all in on the luxury market. At the time they knew their mechanical movements had a certain niche, and they were able to continue on by not changing much. That's also part of the reason why Rolex's designs have barely changed over the decades.

At the same time Omega tried going downmarket to compete with Seiko and had its reputation trashed for a long time. It wasn't until the late-90s where Omega began to recover, but by then Rolex had emerged as the top of the luxury watch market.

Normies definitely would know the difference, to people who have never seen an automatic second hand before the sweep is distinctive.
