I've been thinking about what changed a lot, and besides what you mentioned, I think it has something to do with tone...
Like, before 2017, I'm thinking more before Trump and Qanon, there was a lot more levity. A lot of the same opinions were being expressed, but when you called someone a fag and told them to kys, it was from a position of joking around, more like friends. Now the same words are used and opinions are expressed but in a more pointed way, less like a guys locker room and more like the lead up to a bar fight.
