I like NB's because they're technical, inexpensive and ubiquitous (making them quiet, unassuming) while still being tastefully designed, very simple with minimal flair. They definitely have a japanese feel in that sense, I think. The branding works with the shoe's appeal rather than against it, because it's not trying to be a minimalist designer shoe, it's a simple cheap everyman-everyday piece that can look good "on accident," by joggers who never spent a thought on fashion, and on more careful outfits.
