That's just species that go into dormacy, like certain dendrobiums, most orchids are tropical and don't have a dormacy period.

If you want to, you can just put them in a bucket of water or flood them until water flushes out of the bottom of the pot (if they're in a pot atleast), misting leads to thin European roots on Vandacious orchids, soaking gives you fat American roots.

Calcium is good once in a while, they prefer rainwater though, and it isn't exactly hard (and free) to get rainwater.

Depends on the temperature, all species benefit from a nighttime temperature drop, but tropical species like to grow generally warm.

There's low light, high humidity, cold growing species as well.
