Speaking as someone who started wearing cheap boots and then upgraded to the $600+ tier of boots, it is absolutely worth putting aside that much money for a pair of boots. The quality of the leather and boots construction, as well as the shape of the last is going to make your experience wearing your boots much better. Higher quality leathers will tend to patina much more aesthetically, and you will be able to get multiple resoles throughout the lifetime of the boot. Do not cheap out with a pair of boots. If you do this, you will go through multiple pairs of cheap boots until you come to the realization that spending a little more money at the start really is the better decision. Assuming you're not working fast food, you can manage to budget this within a few months by setting aside $200-300 dollars each month while maybe cutting back on eating out all the time. $600-700 dollars for a pair of footwear that will last you decades really is not a lot of money in the big picture

Don't waste your time with Nicks. They stole their designs from Whites, which was one of the original PNW boot companies, and the quality control at Nicks is pretty risky, not to mention that their customer service is inferior. If you want a versatile 6" lace up boot, go for any Whites in their 55 last, such as the 350 cruiser. You could also put in a custom order for a pair of Whites Bounty Hunters (pic related) at Bakers Boots, but it will likely be like an 8 month wait. I don't own any Whites, but I've had the pleasure of trying on their 350 cruisers at a shop in Portland and was blown away at the level of comfort and support, especially with the instep.
