In Europe you wear backpacks if you mean to carry a significant amount of weight for an extended amount of time. I don't know why its such a big deal for Americans. If you got a laptop you bring to work on public transport, by foot or on bike you put it in a backpack. If you go hiking you put your bottle of water in a backpack, if you go grocery shopping and you transport the stuff any other way but car or bike bags you put it in a backpack. I can only assume the disconnect here is that most Americans only move by car and can't fathom standing or walking while moving some weight for any longer time than from the car to the building.
