The same stereotype applies to IT, programmers and other "techie" or "geek" (hate that word) jobs.

Most professional occupations that involve direct customer interaction are usually required to wear suits to give clients the idea the person worries about his/her appearance therefore s/he takes his job seriously.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that these tech jobs require little human interaction and fashion is one of those aspects you improve upon through interpersonal relationships.

Most references people have on looks, outside of the media, are friends so the more friends a person has, the larger the base of reference on personal appearance. Friends see you in person and are more likely to tell what suits you and what fits like shit especially when looking like shit is a major social risk they take when they hang out with you in public. It would make them look like losers by association so it's either dress better or stop hanging out with us.
