I've got my hair up in a bun right now. It's near shoulder length but a little bushy, not unlike Avan Jogia's. Just thicker. I don't like how it looks when it's tied back and never wear it up in public, though.

I find having good facial hair helps pull off a bun. Also not having a receding hairline or a big forehead. But I mean it's all up to you. You'll either like how it looks or you won't. As for time, a while. I've had long hair for like 10 years because it suits my face better. Well actually that's a lie, I cut it short (just above the ear) because it was getting out of control a couple of years ago. It took about a year to grow back to shoulder length though.
