Beethoven.

He was the first person to develop the "tortured genius/artist" aura and obviously didn't try to do this at all. Many if not all the cooler people from history are artists and/or geniuses that seem tortured or mysterious. Our perception of coolness is personified by him. He was both passionate and a rebel, both miserable and joyful. He was lonely and died the most popular artist in the world, with a state funeral and a legacy greater than napoleon.

For context, Van Gogh was cool, but next to Beethoven he seems like an angsty teenager who cut his ear off to be edgy.

Beethoven changed music and artists forever. He was the first artist to hold more power than politicians, lords, kings and an emperor.

And he did it all while he was fucking deaf.
