i have stan smiths and i've handled CPs in a store. the leather feels just about the same quality-wise; to the touch stans are a little more textured while CPs were smoother. the only major difference is that stans are like puffy under the leather and all the angles are very rounded out, while CPs are flat with sharply creased angles.

if you bear with me for a second here's a diagram i drew of each shoe. the gray lines represent an x-ray view showing how thick/padded it is inside under the leather. stans are puffy and airy, CPs are sharply flat straight to the seams.

personally i'd actually rather get stans because they're more comfortable and wearable being puffy like that, and i can just tell that if CPs don't fit then they will slice your ankles like OP
