formal? dressy? you're not referring to the ones in the pic are you?

sneakers are never formal or dressy

Most people don't start out liking brown, it's something you realize you needed all along once you've already started. I notice a lot of people start out (as teenagers) wanting, like, grey canvas, or purple, or something like that. As I started to get more "into shoes" I wanted navy leather boots; opportunity arose to get brown instead, and it turned out to be the better decision. Brown or natural leather complements casual outfits fantastically. colorful shoes can be fun, but they aren't nearly as versatile, and you get bored of them faster.

sorry in advance for talking as if you don't already know this; posting "just in case"

for boat shoes the brands worth looking at are pretty much just quoddy, yuketen, oak street bootmakers, and rancourt & co (which makes shoes for eastland made in maine and red wing handsewn as well). dunno if you were considering any other brands, but I think that there isn't much else worth considering, unless you want to take your price upward.

I have some experience with Sperry, and while they do hold up well to wear, and they are comfy... I don't know, I just don't like them as much. Maybe it's because the leather doesn't smell as nice as chromexcel, or maybe it's the obnoxious little logo. something irks me. maybe the colorways. The leather isn't awful but it isn't very nice.

you can't tell anything from quoddy's website, look for stockists. their shoes are generally lined, except the ones they make for south willard

all four brands I mentioned are approx. true to size on their shoes, half size large on the boots. all four use primarily chromexcel which is awesome

if you email rancourt you can get them to use a different type/color leather, or a different sole, since it's made to order. that gives you some cool options for customization, but they'll take a while.

osb has the nicest pictures on their website, pic related

yuketen makes the 'weirdest' shoes generally, and most expensive. quoddy and eastland made in maine go on sale cheapest, sometimes on gilt
