Basically, the point is to have a well defined taste, know what looks good and dress accordingly to not only your body, but also your personality. Obviously, to achieve all of that takes a lot of knowledge and analysis(I especially suggest reading Japanese fashion mags like Popeye and thoroughly analyzing everything you see, and then putting what you like to practice).
But uniqueness is exactly what a lot of dudes seek in girls. If you can dress uniquely, without relying on any trends and still look good and attractive, while reflecting your personality with the clothes than that's what makes you really stand out.
