I like the look as long as you use it for informal purposes and don't wear under circumstances that require an actual suit (excluding funerals). Faggots will tell you that it's a mfa-spread bullshit and there are no strict rules regarding the color of your suit linked to the event you use it for, but that's the actual bullshit. If I were your potential employer on a job interview and you showed in a black suit, your first impression opportunity would be already wasted - because regardless of how handsome you were in it, it still gives the "i-cant-do-my-research-and-wear-appropriate-suit" impression.

Also, don't wear traditional menswear sutff with it. Use knit ties instead of solid silk ones (if any), wear sneakers or docs, omit belts of any kind.

To answer your question, go for it, but don't overuse it. That restaurant thing should be totally ok.
