"complimentary" is an actual technical term in colour theory. It's not what you are thinking of in the english language (ie, looking good together). In colour theory it literally just means opposite in the colour wheel

And yes, like it or not, red is the "complimentary" colour to green. It makes both colours pop. But that doesn't mean you can pull it off.
