Sorry, back again.

I can understand if he wanted to wait to make sure the leap year was set correctly; if it wasn't, he might have to reset everything and cycle it through one more time. Hopefully it'll be okay....if you're worried, try calling him up. I don't think he'll be upset if you do; he'll be able to fill you in on how things are going. It's always good to have a friendly relationship with your watchmaker...

Re: Omega. The world timer looks great in person, but it is worth trying it on (as it's on the large size for modern watches). There's a lot of variety for Omega, and their vintage pieces can be excellent if you go with the usual suspects. If you go Co-Axial, just be aware that the only independents who should service them are ones who are Omega certified. Co-axials can be finicky regarding lubricants, so you want an independent who has undergone the training for it. If not, service with Omega directly. For vintages, the only challenge can be getting parts if the watch is obscure. Fwiw, I ended up with Omegas mainly because the design line speaks to me. I love the lyre lugs, I love the proportions on the dial, and I generally love the feel of them. It all works for me. By comparison, other companies all have problems; Zenith looks out of proportion on the dial, Rolex is illegible, Breguet has too much dead space, Breitling is squished together in modern iterations, etc. Everyone has their preferences, of course. Finally: Omega has stopped selling their parts to independents who do not have an Omega Parts Account. Of course, only watchmakers who have undergone the training are able to have a Parts Account...hence. It's a closed system, like Rolex, Zenith, and an increasing number of other brands.

Anyway, buy what you love, and to hell with the rest!

Your macro shots are great too! It gives us a chance to enjoy the polishing as well as the detail of the dial.

Seagull 1963? It's small and looks nothing like a Daytona. Diver chronographs, but they're all rather large. Dress chronographs are the only other options. Also chronographs with odd shapes (Tag Heuer Monaco)

I'm here, Fren. How are you? What watch are you wearing today?

>>18019591
Because you don't need 100m for the watch to be 'waterproof' for daily use. 25m is sufficient, and if you have it tested annually then you can have full confidence in it.

>>18019657
Here, Fren. What watch are you wearing today?

>>18019728
Tissot? I think they have a 3-6-9 configuration of the Valjoux 7753 in their new chronographs; don't know about green dial, but I think it might be an option.

>>18020021
If you follow the people on WUS, or forums dedicated to Rolex in particular, the current average to get a 'good' watch (i.e. a stainless steel Daytona) is around 75-100k, depending on the location. No, there is no point in competing with rich arabs and asians. You won't have to spend 40k for a datejust, you'll just have to wait a while. That's why getting a Daytona used for around 25k or so makes sense if you want it now. Spending lots just to get one at retail makes zero sense, since the 'real' price is the grey-market one. Pay the real price instead of paying multiples to get it at a discount.

>>18020029
Yes, it is a good reputable brand, though vintage Heuer has more respect in the 'community'. The one you are looking at would be fine; have you tried one on in person? That's the real test. Used Speedies are great, but you should factor in a service once you receive it. They're movements are built like tanks, so if it's serviced, it'll work well and long.

Home maintenance can be a very important thing to learn first-hand Anon; it can save you money, but more importantly, it can help you vet out who you can trust when it comes to contractors.

Thank you for the kind wishes, Fren. It seems lately that we lose people every year now, but fortunately (so far) they have all lived long and fulfilling lives, so perhaps it was time for them to move on. Nothing new horologically; I'm quite content with my collection as it is...anything else would be superfluous. What about you? What are you wearing today?

>>17956876
It's nice to have a ying/yang.

>>17956894
Thanks, Fren; what are you wearing as the year turns over?

>>17956937
Surprisingly enough, we are in the same boat, with a common interest in watches. That doesn't stop a single Anon from repeatedly attempting to throw the only deck chronometer overboard...lol

What are you wearing today, Anon? Happy New Year to you when it comes!

Thanks Citizenchad; hope your week is remarkable!

>>17930185
No suggestions of a watch, but what I would suggest is to alter your strategy. You said you have a 'grail' that you are working up to, so that assumes you have one in mind already. Wisest move with the least waste is to simply save for the grail and get it as soon as you can. Every watch you get before your grail pushes your grail further down the road. One thing to consider if you haven't already is servicing costs; I don't know if you've serviced any of your watches yet, but once you get into life-time ownership, then you do have to service them at least every 10 years or sooner so they keep running well, so factor that into the cost as well. That's why I'd stress on simply saving for your grail and getting it sooner; then you can enjoy it longer, and focus only on servicing that one piece.

>>17930224
Good luck, Tudorchad, and don't pick up anything permanent!

>>17930321
Fun!!

>>17930347
A very elegant description....I should save that.

>>17930365
I like it too Anon. Are you thinking of getting it?

>>17930383
Thrift stores, in this day and age, likely won't have Omegas for any sort of deal, but it all depends on where the store is located and how good their internet access is. Just remember that a watch is only as good as the condition of its movement, so even if it seems like a deal, you might have to take it to a watchmaker to service the movement before it runs well. The added cost is something you need to factor in. Sometimes replacement parts to an old movement are no longer manufactured or available, and this makes an old watch even more problematic.

>>17930390
Looks great, OmegaFren!

>>17930399
It would look great with a brown leather strap, but mixing the colours (i.e. a gold buckle) might look too odd.

>>17930400
Do it Anon! It's a rather unique design with good proportions, and you can get a bronze watch for a decent price in that way.

It may be nothing, but I've noticed that newer Rolex cases seem to be designed to look best with what Rolex offers as the standard; this is why if you take a modern Sub off the bracelet and put it on a strap, the lugs tend to look 'too long' for the watch. It's a combination of where they drill the holes for the springbars as well as the actual design of the case. Vintage Rolex is different though, and many if not all vintage models look fine on bracelet or strap..it's just that the modern ones can look awful if you're not careful. The OP could look fine on leather, but as I mentioned before, you have to carefully choose the colour and texture based on the dial. Good luck!

>>17913608
Nice! Those dials are extremely legible under water due to the orange colour...

>>17913609
Most excellent, Fren. What are you wearing tonight? I thought I'd create a new thread since it was essentially dead.

Sounds like a good plan. The one thing I'd do though is see if I could authenticate the uniqueness of the piece; in other words, take a flight to Bienne and check with Omega in person; you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Always love seeing your pieces, man. Stay in good health!

>>17909819
Thanks CitizenChad! Nice coinage too; I don't collect coins, so it's cool to see others.

Alright, here's the last one for today; the hands are askew as they should be!
