Prada, and then Theory catastrophically mismanaged the label, it wasn't a shift in taste...
If anything the styling was more relevant than ever, so much so it left a huge void in the market which a great number of labels looked to fill (and are still attempting to fill) today.

A few things which made HL such a powerful presence in fashion was its subversive advertising techniques/presentations to the public. The brand was never just clothing- it started clothing but it grew to so much more that to necessitate its position it depended on that "so much more", which no one respected after HL left. Things like store design, media campaigns, show presentation, model casting. All very carefully tailored to pursue HL's vision.

I thought it was that they fully integrated the HL jeans line and disowned every other? It felt like everything was brought into HL jeans so it was now analogous to the RTW stuff?

If you read some older sources/forums on the internet you'll hear people say exactly that there was a dramatic change in the clothings physical character (for the worse) after 1999.

I think that's something that a lot of companies don't understand, how some designers were far more than "clothing makers" for their company- they were it's entire philo.

tl;dr: poor management, didn't have adequate resources to upkeep, didn't respect HL's social persona and how it impacted his market.

It's really hard to sum up but it as definitely not an over-saturation or stagnation in styling...
