It's all in the design of the watch, ideally a dress watch should have straight lugs with a small crown (no guards), a relatively small case diameter that's also thin enough to easily fit under a cuff. The hands and dial should have no lume, and only have the bare essentials for telling the time (I think an argument could be made that a date is superfluous). The hands should ideally be baton or dauphine and the dial should be conservative in colour and finish (no flashy snowflake or sunburst). The strap should be a dark leather to complement your attire, bracelets are a definite no.
