can't you tell they're "ehhh" just from the picture? look at that mediocre leather

like look at >>8159839 then back at your pic

there's something wonderful and intimate about your relationship to a good pair of leather shoes/boots

the way they look in the sunlight, the way they look when you really clean and polish them, the way they feel after you've really broken them in

I'm not saying red wing is the be all end all of footwear, far from it, but at least with a pair of iron rangers you get the real boot ownership experience

If you like them, sure (unless you have twig legs and size 11+ feet with a low instep - then you might want to reconsider)

I couldn't do it just because I always die a little inside when I see someone wearing a piece that I own, makes it feel less special

but I'm neurotic about that kind of thing

I don't know. Because I go to school in downtown Toronto, I see a lot of really "beat" sneakers worn by people who just don't feel they need to buy new ones yet (or can't afford to). But many sneakers certainly do look better when they look like they've been properly lived in.

So I guess what I'm saying is I don't have a really clear-cut opinion on it. It would depend on the pair and the fit they're used in. For the most part I like the colors dulled a little and the whites turned to off-white. I think it's good not to let them get terribly dirty though.

(I say that because it just kills me when people don't clean their boots -- beat up is cool, because it says the boots are well-loved and have some history, but dirty just says you don't give a shit about maintaining them)

okay but they're the ugliest god damn things I've seen all day. the leather looks cheap, the color is awful, and it's covered in way too much contrast stitching. And that is all to say nothing of the way it pieces together its scraps of leather in the most strange ways -- what the fuck is with the semicircle on the bottom? Is it supposed to look 'modern'? They're worse than mall-tier shit. I almost didn't respond because I thought it might be a joke.

what do you see in them? what does their look evoke, for you?

Also, I should note that one difference you will come to appreciate is the difference between shoes that have worn and developed character by aging gracefully and shoes that have been pre-distressed to look cool in a picture.

(side note: Bed Stu's distressing is sometimes very uneven from one shoe to the other; on mine the toe of each shoe was a noticeably different lightness)

Shoes made from good leathers do look great as they become distressed and worn over time. But trying to emulate that natural process by pre-distressing a shoe looks phony and cheap. And the leather used in Bed Stu's shoes will never look as amazing as a pair made with a substantial, quality leather.
