OP here. In case anyone is curious about the jagged edges around the top of the boot, I wanted to explain. They do not not come that way. Like any typical pair of leather boots, the tops are rounded with quality double-stitching. The problem I encountered after receiving them is that the shaft height was not as claimed. Instead of 14.9in as advertised, they were actually 16.25in. As a result, the tops bit into the backs of my knees. Rather than go through the hassle of returning them, I shortened the boots myself(while drunk). The results are as you see in the pic.

tl;dr: Never cut leather while inebriated
