I think it's important to add that once upon a time sporting generally meant any activity outside work or formal events, such as riding horses, walking, hunting, and even gambling. It wasn't just sports as we see them now. So really a sport watch is just a watch you wear everyday. In modern watch parlance there really is not a hard distinction between tool watches (eg divers, some chronos, field, any watch designed with a specific professional purpose in mind) and sport watches (eg nomos club, oyster perpetual). The lines have really blurred, but that is where therm came from.
