I personally prefer to navigate my own way between the imperatives of function, cost, and taste. I love the aesthetic of techwear with a strong avant-goth twist, but anything that might occupy that territory is either exceedingly expensive and thus fundamentally impractical for one of my income level, or is rare and scattered far and wide across the landscape of consumer outlets.

However, I've arrived at a successful compromise by combining thoughtfully designed outdoors pieces with small innovations and interventions. My current winter techfagging uniform consists of:

>Nike Flyknit Lupenik in Anthracite
>Rocky Boots GoreTex socks
>Helikon Tex Outdoor Tactical Pants in black
>Black merino tank top
>Black merino sweatshirt
>Black fleece vest with two way zip
>Outdoor Research Paclite GoreTex shell, black

I use elastic loops about two inches in width to tamp down the bag of the pants, giving them a bit of a sculptural dip just below the knee and minimising the rustling of the nylon for maximum stealth gains. I also tuck the hem of the pants into the inner socks, then pull the GoreTex socks over top, which gives the pants a nice smooth transition down to the Nikes. I still need to sew some soft velcro patches onto the vest and sweater to obscure their shitty little logos, but on the whole I'm quite pleased with the arrangement. Functional and affordable techwear styling can be achieved, you just need to find the right pieces and combine them effectively.
