Most variations of le gommunism (side note- a communist society is by definition stateless, you're referring to a "vanguard state" which aims to create a communist society in the distant future, aka socialist state) hold that the state should control the means of production (private property), but citizens may own their own personal property.

Example: The state owns the toothbrush factory, while you own your own toothbrush.

Now, there are other variations where everything is collectively owned by the state, but those are a fringe group of a fringe group of a minority group
